The use of ice packs are helpful to reduce swelling and pain associated with the injury. Elevate the swollen area when possible to help reduce the swelling. Cover the ice pack with a paper towel and place on injured area for 20 minutes. This should be done 3 to 5 times per day with at least 45 minutes between each application.
